If you use CreateObject("MicroStationDGN.ApplicationObjectConnector") instead of CreateObject("MicroStationDGN.Application"), you don't actually have MS become visible (at least that's my experience anyway though admittedly I am currently using it in Excel to connect to MS). I've found ODF to actually be quite fast as well.

Is there any reason why you are doing this in VBA instead of a batch process? I'm sure you can do what you want with both VBA and batch process but with VBA you will also have to consider how you are going to select files to process, what you are going to do with the selected files before performing the actions that you want to perform.
